First Squid Trip of the Season

I made my first Aori Squid trip of the Fall season yesterday with Evil E. The squid, which grow very rapidly, are running small right now, so we fished them with light spinning tackle and had a blast, catching about twenty between us off the shore using size 2.0 to 2.5 Yozuri "Aori-Q" squid jigs.

Evil E shows his choice of squid jig...Most agree that bright pinks and oranges produce well.

My good friend Frank from Big Pancho Lures sent me a bunch of slugs and two molds. I had to drop everything today at work, and start pouring some, as suzuki (Japanese seabass) season is right around the corner.

Soft Plastics: the go-to lure

Soft Plastics are the go-to lure for a myriad of Pacific Ocean species–from sandbass in California, to the dorado I fish here in Japan.

When the fish aren't cooperating, you change lures. If they still do not bite, I often change the lure itself.
Here are a couple of soft plastic lure tuning methods that can be applied to most plastics, and done on the water in a short time.

This is a pretty simple way for even a non-rod builder to customize  a rod.

As you all know, long fights with large pelagic fish can be tiring. Having finger grooves that match the particular shape and size of the angler using the rod will result in less fatigue for your hand, wrist, and arm.

These fish can  be caught year round here in Japan, but they come closer to the surface at night from this time of year until the late Fall.

There are two species of oilfiish that look very different:

Season underway

Our season is underway, but water temps are down a bit from normal; it has been a cold winter here in Japan.

We fished about 30 miles offshore today, and found moderately clean off-blue 72-degree water.
Normally, the water is 75 or 76 by the end of June, so the dorado that we found on the FADS were mostly of the "follows, no swallows" variety.

The edge of the Kuroshio (Japanese Current) was moving quite swiftly, as evidenced by this photo.

My first offshore charter each year is around the end of June, and this year is no different. The beginning of each season often sees the school size yellowfin, bigeye, and dorado on really small bait--what we call "katakuchiiwashi", which is very similar to the anchovies we have in California.

The Japanese suzuki, or seabass, as most call this inshore  fish, is one of the most popular gamefish in Japan.
The fish is generally targeted in three distinct areas:
1. Nearshore shallow reefs from 5 to 15 fathoms--which is primarily vertical jig fishing with jigs that are 30 to 90 grams.
2. Bay areas, such as deep draft ports, where the fish suspend under docks and container ships, where the use of lipless crankbaits and jerkbaits is favored by many.
3. River mouths/brackish areas/surf.

The Japanese "Aori" squid are starting to spawn, which means that they are moving into the shallow waters of both the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan sides of Japan.

These squid are a blast to catch on light tackle, and are prized by the Japanese for sashimi, and fried "calamari" style.
