Fished Saturday out of Dana Point with Herbert and Jeff on Herbert’s fine ride Tight Lines. Headed north in bumpy seas, hopeful to scratch up a flattie or two. It was pretty slow until just before the first tide change, and we put a couple of legal fish on the boat by 11:00. The biggest was 12 pounds or so.

Headed out April 1 with Dustin and his friend Treggon (Tregtronics Underwater Video) for one last shot at retrieving the Nim custom-wrapped acid rod I dumped overboard two weeks ago. Treggon brought his underwater camera. He is an accomplished diver and has won several awards for his videos. It was going to be a new adventure.

Got out on the water Saturday with Dustin in search of the elusive halibut that have not been cooperating for many weeks. My friends Jeff and Eric were out as well so a gentlemen’s bet for the “Halibut Poobah” title was on the line. Big fish takes all.

Headed out Saturday morning with my good friends Jeff and Dustin for a day of bounce-balling for flatties. While provisioning with fuel and ice at the nearby AM/PM, noticed I somehow managed to grab wifey’s keys and mine. Headed back to the homestead and dropped them off. Dunked the boat in Oceanside and my cold-blooded outboard wouldn’t turn over. Out came the backup battery, and we got her jumpstarted. We should have just called it a day then.

As much as I want my first blog filled with tales of big halibut and photos of friends holding them with big old flattie grins, the fish just aren’t cooperating at the moment. I’ve pounded a lot of sand bounce-balling on four trips in the last two weeks, from Dana Point to Carlsbad, in depths ranging from 25 to 130 feet – for not even one short. It may actually be five trips, but who’s counting at this point? Others are experiencing the same results, as well.

Got an invite to fish the Dana Angling Club tuna tournament this weekend on Dave Peter's sweet 30-foot Rampage, Teaser, with Herbert and Larry Marble. How could a man pass that up after two weeks off the water neck deep in honey-do's? The game plan was to hit the morning yellowtail bite in Pyramid then head out in search of tuna, then do it again on Sunday.

Every Year Is Different
Halibut fishing here off the Southern California coast has been slow for most lately. A few nice fish have been reported. I've pounded sand bounce balling in depths from 30 to 110 feet from Carlsbad to Laguna for no joy. Other experienced and successful flattie fishermen have met the same fate. Perhaps it's a pre-spawn lockjaw funk. Maybe the fish moved. Only they really know.
These are some of the fish we've caught in April in the last two years:
