A much-needed day on the water

There has not been a lot of fishing joy here at the homestead lately. It started innocently enough, with wifey casually mentioning a new paint job for the bedroom a few weeks back. Early last week the paint samples arrived. It's day nine now.

The bedroom looked so good the bathroom needed a makeover too. Did I mention this is a 60-year-old house? Oh well, I've managed to survive fixture wiring roulette and lead paint poisoning. A much-needed day on the water looms tomorrow. Interesting stuff, eh?

Halibut fishing really turned back on early last week off Carlsbad and Dana Point with the fish going on the chew. It ended just a fast and has remained slow since Friday, at least for us and others I have spoken with. That's halibut fishing though. It will turn back on again. There's only one wait to find out; get out there and enjoy a summer day on the water. Sometimes you pay your dues pounding heaps of sand bounce-balling with little success. Every now and then the rewards are memorable filling the day with big grins, grown man giggles, maybe even a spontaneous celebratory dance or two. It just doesn’t get much better!

Howdy! It's been a while since my last blog. Wifey and I spent some time in the Bahamas on Great Guana Cay, at my mother-in-law's modest rental cottage. The area is also known as the Abacos. Most of the time the weather was up and I didn’t get any fishing in. We enjoyed some weather windows on the great beaches there. It was very relaxing. The old saying goes "if you can’t have fun in Abaco, you must be on life support." Hopefully I banked lots of fishing points too. Here's a shot of the incredible water

May is a great month to target halibut off Southern California, and this year is no different. The water temps have bumped up, and the fish are moving in now, with lots of folks enjoying productive days up and down the coast.

Now that water temps have warmed up a bit, the spring chew has finally arrived. It’s only going to get better as fish continue to move in to spawn. Our last time out on the water, April 25, we scratched up these three decent fish off Carlsbad, in somewhat snotty conditions. The egg sacks were fully developed. Perhaps they were staging before moving in to spawn. Local sport boats are also starting to get into them pretty good, too.

I guess we all have this competitive edge to be the best and catch the biggest or most fish, and be in the top 10 percent of fisherman, or perhaps 1 percent, that drives us to raise the bar and feel the need for constant gratification each time out. It’s an insatiable urge that at times blinds us to what really matters, like good times on the water with friends or sharing the gift of the ocean with others.

I love to fish for halibut any time, but there’s something special about competing with other skilled fishermen in an organized tournament. Many are good friends, with bragging rights on the line. Such it was Saturday in the annual Oceanside Anglers Open Halibut Tourney. It’s also the biggest halibut tourney of the year here in North County, out of my homeport, by the club I’m a member of.  There are excellent cash payouts, too.

Fished Saturday out of Dana Point with Herbert and Jeff on Herbert’s fine ride Tight Lines. Headed north in bumpy seas, hopeful to scratch up a flattie or two. It was pretty slow until just before the first tide change, and we put a couple of legal fish on the boat by 11:00. The biggest was 12 pounds or so.

Headed out April 1 with Dustin and his friend Treggon (Tregtronics Underwater Video) for one last shot at retrieving the Nim custom-wrapped acid rod I dumped overboard two weeks ago. Treggon brought his underwater camera. He is an accomplished diver and has won several awards for his videos. It was going to be a new adventure.
