My friend Steve, who owns the 26 Blackman called Fish Machine, invited me to join him on a day of bone fishing in the back bay. Scott from the office and I joined him last Thursday. We left the dock at around 7:00 a.m. and ran deep into the bay to Steve’s favorite spot.

“Thank God trade show season is over,” is the typical statement you will hear come out of my mouth once the doors close on the Fred Hall Del Mar show. Then once I get home to sleep in my own bed in my own house and watch my own television, I finally get to think of the great things that come of the shows.

With the baitballs starting to get thick inshore to around three miles offshore, the scene is set for the biannual thresher runs. We are quickly approaching the thresher sharks prime spring migration which seems to find the main body on a typical year in front of La Jolla by April, by early may the canyons off of Oceanside are full, and by mid may and on the Dana Pt to Newport area are jam packed with fish.

Well, a few days ago the 60-foot Viking Bad Company hit a great big whale while fishing Cabo. There were whales all over the bank, and this one sure seemed fond of the Bad Co. Edition. The impact, according to witnesses,was so great that they really don’t know who hit who! Like owner Anthony Hsieh said, “It’s just a boat. Everyone is safe. That’s all that matters.” The 60-footer took it like a champ and got them back to port safely.

Well $10 beers and crowded hallways are in most fishermen’s future coming up in March. The tension that the season is near can be felt in the air: guys talking about their plans for the season and what tackle they need to get it done. Even the guys getting ready to buy their first boat, antsy to see what the Fred Hall show special is on the vessel of their dreams. Ah, Fred Hall is back in town.
