After over a year in the process for Southern California's shot at the dysfunctional MLPA process we are looking to get a few answers as to what we may really be looking at, map wise that is. The Blue Ribbon Task Force is set to make a decision on its recommendation to the DFG Commission on November 10th which is just days away.

Our marlin season this year was outstanding. We finished 4th and 5th place on the 1 Hot Tuna in the Catalina Classic this year with two tankers.
It started out with an early season trip in July with our printer Chris which resulted in a release of a huge local marlin much larger than our two Catalina Classic fish.
We didnt have too many trips this year but we made the most of what time we had on the water. Our tournament journey started out with a quick release on our prefish day in the first ten minutes on the water. The sleepers were right outside laguna and Scott made a great cast and we released a nice fish in short order.
The tournament went on with us catching two nice qualifiers and having first place for the first hours of the tournament and by the end of day one we were knocked to third. By the end of the second day our larger qualifier still would not hold out and we took fourth and fifth. We were the only team to catch two qualifiers this year.

Our first trip offshore took us to the 43 for a handful of albacore, a huge yellowtail, and a lost bluefin. Hey, not bad when most sport boats weren't clearing 15 fish at the time.

While out in Florida Scott from the office and I made our way up to deep-drop during the daytime with my good friend Capt. Cory Burlew. This was my first time sword-fishing in Florida without the wind blowing a gust.

Well, the gang and I from the magazine made our way out to Orlando, Florida, to check out all of the new tackle for the '09 - '10 season. There were too many new products to go into, but a couple that stood out were...

I just can't catch seabass.....it does'nt matter what I do I just can't catch them. Recently I was out on the Ultra fishing seabass and I got burned off on the first one and chewed off on the second. Its just one of those things I have to accept. I know they say "never say never" but I cant buy one of these guys....

Today, news broke of some dirty pool in the RSG process of forming the closure area maps. Only six were supposed to be voted through, but when the enviro map was shot down, the rules were bent to keep it in the process.
We really need to be vigilant about this process and show up to every meeting to let them know that we will not be stepped on. Changing the rules when the game is almost over is ridiculous and should be investigated. If this RSG process is just a dog-and-pony show to make the consumptive users feel like they got their point across, I would rather get through the manure!
This type of manipulation of the process will not be accepted and is a slap in the face to all those following the rules of the process and working hard at this. I have a friend on the RSG board, and I can tell you that he has put his whole heart in to this thing. If this turns out to just be a sham there are going to be some real angry fellas.

It was great to see so many faces at the RSG meeting with concern over our fishing rights. The disappointing part was listening to enviros talk about saving animals like sand crabs, which is ridiculous.

Well, by now we are usually seeing some big scores of seabass at Catalina and some nice shots of yellowtail at Clemente. We are also used to seeing a good bite on threshers off La Jolla and consistent yellowtail off the Coronados. Although it has not taken off, we have seen a little action – just not what we wish for.

I don’t know about you, but I grew up fly-fishing and tying flies. For some reason over the years, I fell off the bandwagon when we got our current boat and only focused on conventional fishing. Recently, I had an idea - an idea I know a lot of you have had but haven’t followed through on. I am going to start keeping a saltwater fly rod on the boat at all times.
There are so many situations when I have wished I had another way, a way that takes a bit more skill when we get bored of a wide-open albacore bite. How about the guys down in Mag Bay or the Golden Gate this year? Fifty marlin a day? Think about the opportunity to catch your first billfish on fly?
