It’s time for our annual Pacific Coast Sportfishing Festival and Orange County Boat Show. This year it’s Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, at the Orange County Fairgrounds. You may be asking yourself, “Why do I need to attend this event?” The answer is, to learn to be a better fisherman and to get the tackle and boat accessories it takes to accomplish this goal. Our seminars will cover topics for both the novice and the expert. Everyone is invited to come on over.

Tropic Star Lodge December 2010
Scott from the office, Dad and I made our way to Tropic Star Lodge in Panama early December. We were looking forward to great fishing and tropical weather. Let's just say we were met by both!

Just About Finished Up
I would say that after fishing both the Zane Grey and the Catalina Classic in some of the poorest conditions I have ever fished in that my offshore season is just about up! I am not saying that if the marlin start to bite or if there is a wild fall season of tuna I won’t go, but my offshore gear is being stowed away. I am gearing up to do some rockfishing (which, by the way, is my favorite type of fishing) at Clemente, taking a few friends out to pull on some small threshers. The hoopnets are being dusted off, and we are ready to eat some bugs.

Sure, it’s a late season...
Yes, I know, everyone is chomping at the bit for the fish to really get here. Tuna at 140 nautical miles from San Diego does not qualify as our "local" tuna season. Although things are late, they are coming.
By the way, they are late everywhere in the world on the Pacific. I heard that...

San Clemente Island
As the water starts to warm up, we spend weekend after weekend trying to get on that great yellowtail bite at Clemente. I have taken two trips so far, and although there are some fish showing on the front, the backside is still not giving any of its golden bounty.

The Giant Squid Bite Is On
Tuesday night, I took Dan from the office and my buddy Kip out to catch giant squid. We all have done it before, but it's worth doing when they come in.

Who are the true hardcore fishermen, anyway?
Over the break between Christmas and New Year, I found myself boat-less with a son who wanted to go fishing. So we ended up at a little pond by the house, catching tiny largemouth bass with a worm and bobber. We struck up a conversation with a gentleman who spends a couple hours a day in this tiny pond. He is a diligent angler and works hard to catch; the problem is that the only fish to catch are tiny largemouth bass and a couple of two pounders or so, along with a selection of small turtles that take the bait on accident. He is definitely what I would call a hardcore angler; he just loves to fish.

It is on its way back!
With Christmas quickly approaching and thanksgiving just in our dust, we need to reflect back on this year. It has been a tough one for the entire world economically. We have in most industries seen a slowdown in the fairytale economic world we were living in. Our homes were worth double what we bought them for and our stocks were soaring high. It is on its way back!
