I got to see our cutter in action as the weather laid down and the fishermen came out. We came in contact with a fishing vessel which had not been inspected at sea in over a year and was actively fishing. The OPS sent out a boarding team on "Shark 1", our cutter's "over the horizon" (OTH) small boat. This OTH was crewed by a boarding officer, two maritime enforcement rated petty officers, and boatswain's mates for the handling of the "Shark 1". In the Coast Guard, those ranked petty officers and above are federal law enforcement agents. This boarding of the F/V was done quickly and easily. OPS told me that the Coast Guard wants to make the boarding as low impact as possible for the fishermen, so she checked with them over VHF first to make sure they had completed their set of gear before the team inspected them. The catch on the F/V was sablefish and assorted rockfish mixed with some spiny dogfish and skate by-catch. On this particular vessel, there was an observer from NOAA, so the risk of illegal fishing was low.
Before we could meet other fishing vessels, the fleet had headed in because of an impending storm. All day Sunday we had a gale blowing, giving us 10-18 foot seas and driving rain. In the Pacific Northwest, boarding windows come and go, as the ability to launch the small boats is impaired by the fickle weather.

I’m reporting to you from the 210’ US Coast Guard Cutter STEADFAST, as Pacific Coast Sportfishing Magazine covers the Coast Guard’s “Living Marine Resource Patrols” here in the Pacific Northwest. It is a rare opportunity to live among an active duty Coast Guard crew for two weeks. I will be reporting on their enforcement of various fisheries laws, as well as the safety regulation and search and rescue efforts that may come our way. Currently, the CGC STEADFAST makes LMR patrols in the Pacific Northwest, and also ventures off of Mexico/Central America for illegal drug interdiction. She was built in 1968 and earned a reputation as the “White Shark” of the Caribbean from drug cartels. It is the first and only one of two Coast Guard Cutters to have seized more than one million pounds of marijuana.

Marina Del Rey played host to the 6th and final regular season tournament of the 2012 SWBA Tournament Series, the LA Chase. The event attracted 44 teams that had 8 hours to fish the waters between Point Mugu and Point Vincente in an attempt to bring in the largest 5 fish bag of bass. This event was open to all three species (sand bass, calicos and spotted bay bass) and offered a 5 point bonus for any team weighing at least one of each species.

During the weeks leading up to the event, teams found good fishing for Calicos along the Palos Verdes coastline and excellent fishing for Sand Bass on the rocks and reefs to the south. With the northern boundary putting half of Palos Verdes off limits, many teams that would normally target Calicos pre-fished for Sand Bass as a fall back plan in case PV was too crowded on tournament day. Reports from final days of pre-fishing before the week long off-limits period, were that the Sand Bass fishing was tougher than it had been in previous weeks and that some dirty water had moved in off PV. Well, just like in every event, all the anglers could do was sit back and wait to see what happened on tournament day.

The SWBA Tournament Trail headed south on March 31st for the second event of the 2012 season, “The Bordertown Brawl”. The tournament, which was sponsored by Codornices Supremas and held in the Chula Vista Marina, was the first multi-bay tournament in SWBA history. The format gave teams eight hours to fish San Diego or Mission Bay in an attempt to catch the largest five fish bag of Spotted Bay Bass.

On Saturday February 11th, sixty nine teams turned out to kick off the 2012 SWBA season at the “Cabin Fever Reliever”, a Spotted Bay Bass only event, in Newport Harbor. Expectations were pretty low going into the event as pre-fishing had been extremely difficult. In fact, several veterans of the series said that it was the worst fishing they’d experienced in the SWBA’s eight year history of hosting Newport Harbor events.
