Thresher shark action is widespread along the mainland; however Rock Island near La Conchita remains the most revered local hotspot, where jumpers are seen and hooked regularly.
T-sharks are also found ranging well up the coast off of Hope Ranch, Goleta, Ellwood, Tajiguas and Gaviota. Mackerel are plentiful, thankfully, so the best live bait is easy to jig up with a small bait gangion or a shiny spoon.
Drifters and trollers are both finding fish. Drifters are pinning live mackerels on wire leaders. While others prefer to slow-troll with big Rapalas, especially size 18 and 22 in the green mackerel pattern. Drifters can also drop live baits to the bottom and pick up a bonus halibut.
