Going Fishing

Every once in a while a writer has to go fishing and that is what I have been doing this past month. First to Alaska for some halibut, then to the Eastcape of Baja for a Tournament Anglers Assn. marlin tournament at Palmas de Cortez, and then the albacore came in ahead of schedule to Half Moon Bay. Had a great time at all three locations and feel really refreshed!
The Alaska halibut was wonderful. No trophies, but nice weather and it was very rewarding to fish with my good friend Bob Franko, the founder of Coastside Fishing Club and one of the truly great anglers around. I spent a week on Prince of Wales Island, just a short jump from Ketchikan, and can’t wait to spend more time there. This is one of the really wonderful angling paradises.
The Eastcape is another angling paradise and it lived up to its reputation as I released two marlin the first day of the tournament. It was a 30# test tournament with a bonus for landing them under 15 minutes, so it made it challenging and fun. Here is a pic of my second one:

Then, with a short interlude for the World Series of Poker where I didn’t win a thing, I got my boat Noosacat ready for albies.
Here is my boat:

The weather turned good on Wednesday, July 15 for a run to the temp break offshore. We ran 42 miles offshore and put in right on top of them, thanks to Terrafin.com and their great SST charts. Started fishing at 8:20 AM and had 20 nice ones by 10:20 AM when we stopped to ice them down. It felt wonderful to have the tuna back! I had a warm glow during that early ride home.
One of my favorite sights: Albacore about to be filleted and put on ice.

Now if only we could get our salmon season back I would be one happy angler.
