This one's for Betsy!

I guess we all have this competitive edge to be the best and catch the biggest or most fish, and be in the top 10 percent of fisherman, or perhaps 1 percent, that drives us to raise the bar and feel the need for constant gratification each time out. It’s an insatiable urge that at times blinds us to what really matters, like good times on the water with friends or sharing the gift of the ocean with others.

Betsy was a widower in failing health, a dear friend of my in-laws in Palm Desert, who loved fresh fish but didn’t have the opportunity to get it often, but she always had a positive outlook on life. Whenever we had a decent haul, I would vacuum seal some small Betsy portions and someone would deliver it at the next opportunity.

One day last year we received a homemade halibut-shaped platter from Betsy. It was unexpected, made with great care and love. Her first effort broke and she worked hard to make another.

Betsy passed on last week.

My wife and I pulled out the platter, and it occurred to me that we are truly blessed to have the opportunity to share our passion with others.
