Spring's Kicking
Apr. 6 2009, 9:37 AM
Fished Saturday out of Dana Point with Herbert and Jeff on Herbert’s fine ride Tight Lines. Headed north in bumpy seas, hopeful to scratch up a flattie or two. It was pretty slow until just before the first tide change, and we put a couple of legal fish on the boat by 11:00. The biggest was 12 pounds or so.

Herbert looked at me and said, "Should we try to find a new spot or keep working this area?" We both knew the answer: don't leave fish to find fish. It was full-contact bounce-balling working tight to structure.

Jeff barbequed some fine double-double cheeseburgers with mushrooms and all the fixings for lunch. Once you picked it up, it was time to maul until it was finished, and not worry if it got in your ears.

Kept pounding sand, like we always do, and got a good biter about 3:15. Herbert did a fine job and she hit the deck. A fine big she fish. We were way stoked. Every boat in the area heard that big flattie primal scream. Then it’s followed with the big flattie shakes for the crew. I don’t know what it is, but every time a big flattie is on the deck, it makes a man shake from the knees up. We scratched up one more legal 20 minutes later, maybe 8 pounds.

Called it a day about 4:30. Herbert's fish weighed 37.4 lbs at the certified scale at the fuel dock. It's his personal best and a fine fish.

Spring is kicking in and it’s only going to get better! Stay tuned.
