Headed out April 1 with Dustin and his friend Treggon (Tregtronics Underwater Video) for one last shot at retrieving the Nim custom-wrapped acid rod I dumped overboard two weeks ago. Treggon brought his underwater camera. He is an accomplished diver and has won several awards for his videos. It was going to be a new adventure.
Loaded up the old glasspar and headed out about 2:30. Brought the bounce-ball gear just in case Treggon came back up and said "The big butts are stacked thick down there."
Got out to the AR in 60 feet in front of the harbor in no time and dropped the hook on it. Treggon geared up, flopped in backwards over the rail, and followed the rope to the rocks. Dustin and I watched his bubble trails as he circled them for about 15 minutes. Then Treggon starts to surface about 25 yards away, and a rod tip comes up first. Dustin's yelling, "He's got a rod!" Could it be! Turned out to truly be April Fools day. It was an old spinning outfit that looked like it had soaked for some time.
Treggon made another attempt and found an anchor. His air was running low after expending a lot of effort in the search pattern, and it was time to call it. Had we not snagged the rigs on Saturday, it would have been a no-brainer to find it by following the spectra from the rocks. I guess it just was not to be and Treggon worked his but off trying. Thank you!
Pounded a little bit of sand in the area just because we were out there for no joy. The water temps had bumped back up to 60 with improved clarity.
The best part was yet to come though. Treggon's video of the adventure with heaps of underwater footage of the AR. You can also see a dodger and purple haze dredge in action near the end.

I've pounded that area always wondering exactly what the structure looked like, based on the massive echoes on the sounder. Now we know. I’d imagine most of the artificial reefs in shallow So Cal waters support a similar cast of characters. Thanks again, Treggon.
