Lingcod opener

The king of groundfish – the raging “lingasaur” – is now in season. Conditions were rough at the wild, west end of the Santa Barbara Channel, but along the mainland coast and off of Santa Cruz and Anacapa islands, there was action to be found on lings to 15 pounds. Bigger ones will come to gaff by the end of the coming weekend.
Jigs were effective on the opener, as were the large and lively sardines available at the bait receivers. Best bet was a shiny jig with a baited teaser hook a couple of feet up from the jig. Rockfish were biting the baited teaser hook, and lings were tempted by the shiny jig worked intimately close to rugged rocky reefs.
I was particularly impressed by big stacks of hungry rockfish holding over structure spots off of Anacapa Island today. They were anxious to eat and ready to battle. At the deeper spots over 250 feet, reds are plentiful, while coppers reign in waters under 250 feet. Double dropper loops proved most effective, especially when baited with Gulp baits or squid strips.
