Thar she blows!!!!

Well, a few days ago the 60-foot Viking Bad Company hit a great big whale while fishing Cabo. There were whales all over the bank, and this one sure seemed fond of the Bad Co. Edition. The impact, according to witnesses, was so great that they really don’t know who hit who! Like owner Anthony Hsieh said, “It’s just a boat. Everyone is safe. That’s all that matters.” The 60-footer took it like a champ and got them back to port safely.

I can remember fishing albacore on the Airplane Bank years back in my buddy Frank’s boat, the Fish Wish, and hearing a guy calling for help on the radio. He had just been hit by a whale and his 30-plus-footer was thrown violently in the air as the whale came up underneath. Word has it that later that year the boat was hit again by another whale. I think I would retune my props to a different song!

One more whale tale while we are on the subject: When I was fishing aboard the Dominator around five years ago, we were on a steady albacore bite, and we had nice-sized bluefin smashing baits just outside of the reach of the proper-sized gear. I threw out a light 15-pound outfit on an oversized calico rod. The reel was filled with spectra and could outlast a 50-pound bluefin….right?

So the first cast splashed as it hit and a tanker bluefin blew up on the bait. No one had hooked one yet and I was on. The first run was a couple hundred yards and I ended up on the bow with way too much line in the water. Twenty minutes or so later the fish was directly off the bow and I noticed a large blue whale surfacing for air. My bluefin was outside of the whale and my line was over the whale’s back. Before I could say two words, the line rubbed and the whale stole my tuna. Needless to say whales can be a great sign while fishing, but don’t let them snake your bluefin!
