You'll learn more in a day from a charter captain than in a year on your own.

Early season water temps are surprisingly high this year, so while you concentrate on the fresh groundfish season, keep a watchful eye out for surface activity: birds working, hordes of marine mammals feeding, fish chasing bait-balls to the surface. Keep a surface jig rigged and ready to grab and cast for barracuda, bonito, and maybe even yellowtail.

Meanwhile… So Cal islands are kicking out huge reds, bocaccio, chucklehead, ocean whitefish, sheephead, cabezon. All the usual suspects are biting well. Just remember to turn loose those lingasaurs until their season opens April 1st. Once it opens, don’t let a lingasaur make an April Fool out of you!
