Jumbo Local Yellowfin Tuna are here!

Each year, the Pacific side of Japan's main Island of Honshu sees a local run of schoolie yellowfin tuna similar in size to the one-day tuna the SoCal anglers catch. These fish are from 10 to 25 pounds, and are fun on light popping tackle.

I got a call from the captain of the Tenya Maru out of Wagu, Mie Prefecture Japan and he explained that the Japanese Current , called the Kuroshio, is really close to shore this year, and the yellowfin tuna are unusually large. The smallest have been 45 pounds, with the average fish at 30 kilos, or 65 pounds.
The big fish of the week was a whopping 92 pounds!
The FADS at 30 miles have been holding dorado (shira, in Japanese), but no tuna. The tuna have been at the 50 mile mark, on whales, or the heavy current breaks the the Kuroshio creates.
Anglers have been casting sinking pencil baits

and many of the fish have been lost due to the fact that most of the regular Japanese anglers here have not caught such large size local fish, and many are not prepared, tackle wise for fish of this size.
No one knows how long these fish will be in one day range, so I tried to book a trip for this week, but every boat is booked.
I did find a spot for Monday, August 23, so I am spooling up the Trinnies, and Stella 12K and 18K reels.
Hopefully I, or my buddy will get a fish for me to blog about.
