San Clemente Island

As the water starts to warm up, we spend weekend after weekend trying to get on that great yellowtail bite at Clemente. I have taken two trips so far, and although there are some fish showing on the front, the backside is still not giving any of its golden bounty.

We have done really well on the reds and released a few big lingcod (which opens April 1st). The calicos are biting full-speed at times, but the yellows have not found that magic water temp to turn them on yet. We are heading back over on the lingcod opener, and we will spend some time working our butterfly jigs off the hard bottom on the back side, hoping to strike it big with some nice yellows.

Hopefully, the seabass bite at Catalina will keep the crowds thin over at Clemente and increase our chances of things lasting once they get going. Any day now, the bite will turn on so keep your eyes out for birds working while over at the islands!
