When the Weather Breaks
Flattie fishing has been decent when the weather breaks. My friend Herbert took some folks visiting from Illinois out recently. They bounce-balled for a bit out of Dana Point in rough conditions for one good biter. She was full of it, taking them deep into the kelp twice. The spectra mainline got her out after many tense moments. When all was said and done, a fine 27-lb flattie hit the deck.

Little man Hunter and his Super Hero’s approved of the effort.
I need to get some of these…………but am Super Hero challenged. Please do tell who they are!!!
It just does not get much better.

Hi Marcy,
That's a great question. Since bounceballing is slow trolling the bottom of the water column, you can use many things with success. Halibut are ambush oriented fish and it comes down to personal preference and confidence in whatever you use.
I use 6 hoochies (plastic hollow squid) with a 5 1/2 inch white grub tail that fits up into the middle of the squid so the tail wiggles nicely on the trailing edge. It's nice to not buy bait.
The end result is the dodger waggling back and forth with the hoochie rig wiggling behind it. Capt. David Bacon wrote a great article on bounceballing in this months PCS magazine. It also has pictures of my rigs. Or you can go to my website as well.
There's no substitute for time on the water pounding sand to find the bite pattern.
Hope you do well, it's that time of year!
