More About Spinning Reel Upgrades

Question:  Hello, I am new on this forum and from France. I am interested in spinning reels from a Taiwanese manufacturer. Some of their reels seems to have large drag washers like Stella and Saltiga, but no one in France is familiar with these models. Have you an idea on these reels? Have you tried them? Thanks for your answer.  (Narbonne, France)

Answer:  Many of these lower priced reels have a design that is similar to their higher priced Asian cousins.  The money saved in materials, manufacturing and R&D allow these off brand reels to sell at a cheaper price.  If you can change out the drag washers to greased carbon fiber, these reels should be fine, but do not expect the same level of performance.  Bearings should be opened and packed with grease as well.  These are the two common areas where all spinning reels fail.

Most of these reels use a traditional stack of three washers inside the spool and a single fiber washer underneath.  The fiber washer under the spool can remain in place.  The felt, teflon or composite drag washers inside the spool must be replaced with carbon fiber.  Measure the ones from your reel and match them up to something on this list.    http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=21.0 The drag washer dimensions in spinning reels are often not that critical at all.   As long as they fit inside the spool, you should be fine.  You can order the parts from any one of several sites online.  Don't forget a small tub of Cal's Grease to grease the drag washers.  You will be amazed at the difference.  Alan
