Resources Secretary Chrisman Being Replaced by Water Guy

I have long been a critic of Governor Schwarzenegger's Resources Secretary Chrisman who, between the two of them, have done enormous harm during their term to the environment and especially to our salmon, striped bass, and the entire Sacramento River delta. So now Chrisman steps down (finally!) to be replaced by Lester Snow. Mr. Snow has been a water bureaucrat his entire career as evidenced by his resume sent out in a press release last week:

“Since 2004, he has served as director for the California Department of Water Resources. From 2004 to 2001, he was a principal in a water resource consulting company. Prior to that, Snow served as the Mid-Pacific regional director of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. From 1995 to 1999, he served as the executive director of the CALFED Bay-Delta program and, prior to that, spent seven years as the general manager of the San Diego County Water Authorit Snow's experience also includes six years with the Arizona Department of Water Resources including four years as the Tucson area director.  Snow's experience also includes six years with the Arizona Department of Water Resources including four years as the Tucson area director.”

So to the relief of most of the angling community Mr. Chrisman is retiring. During his term we saw the complete collapse of the salmon fishery, the end of any attempt to encourage the health of the striped bass, and the implementation of the MLPA in such a biased and anti-fishing procedure that science was twisted and turned on its head to get us out of MPA’s.  And much of this was clearly the fruit of the Governator’s agenda to create a water crisis and get the peripheral canal approved as a solution to the problem—another example of saying a lie loud enough and long enough that you actually can get away with it.

And now we have Mr. Snow, appointed by the same governor, and one who knows the water system in California in depth, and one who comes with a significant background of shipping water south. It is hard to believe that this will do anything to improve our fisheries, but one can hope that he will make some effort to understand that his office is about much more than water, and saving salmon and the Sacramento Delta are also part of his job. Gee, and maybe he will look into cleaning up this farce of an MLPA process. You think?
In the same press release, the governor announced the appointment of John McCamman as the director of the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG). Here is Mr. MCCamman’s background:

“McCamman, 56, of Sacramento has since 2006, served as chief deputy director of DFG where he has been acting director since November 2009 and previously from 2007 to 2008. McCamman was senior vice president for Fleishman-Hillard Government Relations from 2003 to 2006 and chief of staff for U.S. Congressman George Radanovich from 1994 to 2003. Prior to that, he was county administrative officer for Shasta County from 1992 to 1994 and Mariposa County from 1987 to 1992.”

Despite his lack of background in fisheries and game management I am hopeful that Mr. McCamman will fight for the recovery of our fisheries and the rehabilitation of the Sacramento Delta. I wish him every success in his new job.
