It is on its way back!
With Christmas quickly approaching and thanksgiving just in our dust, we need to reflect back on this year. It has been a tough one for the entire world economically. We have in most industries seen a slowdown in the fairytale economic world we were living in. Our homes were worth double what we bought them for and our stocks were soaring high.
It is on its way back!
There are a few who have seen an up-tick for the wrong reasons, like a relative of mine in the alcohol industry who has seen a 100 percent increase in business this last year. Some of our fishery has been in jeopardy and still is. This last year has done two things for me: One is that I have been able to focus on some of the smaller personal items that I take for granted, and the other is seeing the importance of getting out on the water and enjoying what we do have.
My second son, Fisher William, was born on November 12th of this year, and although I was moping around about a few things, I was able to kick myself and wake up! I have a healthy family, and a couple of purebred deckhands ready to tackle big game records in a few years. I have really seen that my family is an extremely important part of enjoying this life. Even when all the money in the world comes to you or goes away your family will still be there.
Also in these tough times, you can’t beat the boat prices. If you ever wanted to get your dreamboat and you are already feeling the upturn in our economy, get out there and grab it before the prices jump back up. The prices that boats are going for at this time are unheard of and will not come around again.
As far as getting out on the water, do it. I have heard talk of not buying a license for next year to protest, but that is just doing what the enviros want. They want you to go cry about what might be lost - instead of focusing on what will be and is still available.
As soon as this whole thing is done, I am going to put together a map of the areas that are still available. I know it’s tough to see these regulations, and they are not in stone yet, but once this thing is put to rest, let’s get back to fishing!

Congratulations on the birth of your second son, there is no sound sweeter than the first cry of a newborn baby.
Here's to next year being better than this year both economically and for fishing in Southern Cal. I wish you Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year.
