Oct 21 MLPA meetings

I had the distinct pleasure of attending the recent Oct 21 MLPA meetings in Long Beach. There was a great turn out of similarly concerned folks wearing black shirts in support of Proposition 2. This was our last opportunity to voice concerns before the Blue Ribbon panel chose which proposal would be recommended to the DFG. Hopefully extreme closures proposed by Proposition 3 (and their deep pockets) whose supporters wore blue shirts, could be prevented.

As much as I want to have faith in government to implement reasonable measures providing sustainable fisheries, most of us left with the expected uneasy lump in our throats. Here are a few random personal observations that keep me up at night. The areas closed will be so forever.

Having our status reduced to being labeled a “consumptive” while our excise taxes and license fees significantly fund state fish and game operations, including research. Seals are still called seals. They “consume” the entirety of La Jolla children’s pool, only contributing stench. We must save them!

How any proposals “socio-economic” impact can be measured when the DFG has not provided clear enforcement policies prior to making decisions that will close areas forever? Can we travel through a reserve with fish caught in an open area? Perhaps it’s best to just head 3 miles west and go around the boundaries, if only we can figure out where they are. Best of luck to the spearo’s and kayak fisherman.

Watching a yellow school bus full of innocent brainwashed inner-city kids, each wearing blue “MPA’s work” t-shirts, being lead around like sheep by their handlers. In retrospect, candy, free food, a field trip, and extra credit is a strong motivator at that age. Someone asked one if he had ever been fishing. “No, but it sure sounds like fun” was the response. Good to see our tax dollars spent wisely.

The Los Angeles water district/sewage supervisor urging the blue ribbon task force to not adopt Proposition 2. It includes a sewage outfall and they cannot meet water quality standards. The resulting pollution would compromise the biological integrity of the reserve. It’s comforting to know the MLPA process is targeting the proper “consumptive” group to restore healthy fisheries.

Listening to Prop 3 supporters reiterate time and time again the projected annual economic impact is $300,000. Somehow they excluded recreational fishing from their study. This was after Shimano America’s President Dave Pfieffer spoke, advising they may be forced to move operations from Irvine and relocate in another state.

My good friend Herbert called just before the second round of evening meetings began and said “let’s go fishing tomorrow”. We bounceballed for flatties north of Dana Point and the chew was on. By days end we had four in the box, plus a bonus 27 inch lingcod and released a small black sea bass. It was a great day on the water, just what was needed.

I can’t help but flash back to the MLPA scientist saying our fishery is in dire trouble. Fish are getting smaller resulting in a gene pool of “midgets”. He must not spend much time on the water.
