Albacore - Monterey Hot Bite
Wow! Have the albies been biting off Monterey this week. Fishing around the 36.15/122.52 area has been WFO this week. Private boat scores in the 20s and 30s are common and even much larger scores have been reported. I had a day where we got to 20+ in less than two hours, all on the troll. Just as good as it gets. After the non-albacore year last year, this year has been wonderful. The albies hit Northern California early this summer and are still around in large numbers. Get a flat day and the boats are taking advantage.

This year marks the first year when limits matter. You will recall that two years ago we established limits of 25 albacore North of Pt. Conception, and 10 albacore South of the point. I heard about one guy fishing solo who stopped when he got to 25 after somebody radioed him that that was limit. This is the first time that I have heard of someone actually stopping because he reached the 25 fish per person limit. Pretty hard to get a limit when you have three or four guys fishing on a small boat! I am glad that we have a sensible limit on this internationally caught fish, the recreational catch in California doesn’t amount to a pimple on an elephant when considering the millions of tons of commercial take.
And the albacore off OR and WA are apparently plentiful as well. The fleet off Westport seems to be landing quite a few, and in fairly close. The worldwide population of albies is supposed to be approaching an overfished condition, and last year we all worried about what was happening. This year it seems that the population off our coast is healthy and accessible to recreational boaters. Thank goodness for the tuna action what with the salmon season not happening, tuna has saved some of us from selling our boats. Get out and get them while they are here, this is a good year.
