Folks, a bunch of special interest groups and politicians are about to determine your fishing future (MLPA). I'm sure you have heard about it. Somehow reasonable, proven management tools like slot limits, seasons, and reduced bag limits were ignored in lieu of total closures for thousands of acres of prime coastal habitat. Once closed, they will be off limits forever. Who knows what half-baked schemes deep pockets will buy next. It just stinks. But it's real.

Saturday I joined a bunch of other concerned fisher types for a grassroots rally organized on Bloodydecks. It’s not like we typically roll out of bed, throw on our Birkenstocks, and say “let’s find a good rally today.” None of us had ever done such a thing before. Similar rallies occurred in Orange County and Los Angeles.

So we hooked up our boats and met at South Shores in Mission Bay, not really sure what to do next. Thanks to the great efforts of some, and an online auction to raise funds, banners, flyers, and stickers were available.  There were many heartfelt homemade banners too. I was joined by Simon and his son Otto, who spent many hours the night before making his banner. Somehow we managed to rig it up on the boat, while others did the same.

The caravan hit the road two-dozen-or-so strong. Two hours later after visiting the Shelter Island ramp, we ended up at Dana Landing, where a local news crew was ready. Then it was back to South Shores for a pot luck and barbeque with tuna, dorado, tri-tip, hamburgers, tuna jalapeno poppers...it was most excellent. What a great day with some really great people. It felt good to do something.

Thursday, September 10, is the last chance for “the pubic” to make their opinions known, before final decisions are made behind closed doors. The meeting is at the Sheraton Gateway in Los Angeles. Please consider attending, and/or contacting elected officials to voice your concerns, or do nothing and silently accept what is being railroaded down our throats. Here’s a link to look up local officials by zip code http://www.legislature.ca.gov/port-zipsearch.html.They all want to be re-elected.

There is no time to waste. Otto did it………….

Many thanks to those who given so much already in effort and time!
