Santa Barbara Channel Update
Aug. 20 2009, 9:54 AM
You can't go wrong fishing the Santa Barbara Channel this week. The weather is mild and the fishing is wild. At Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands, the three B's (bass, bonito and barracuda) are hammering lures and baits. White seabass and yellowtail strike our baits when the mood strikes them. Halibut haunt the coves along the north shores of Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa islands. Huge rockfish and lingcod the size of your leg are available at San Miguel Island.

Along the mainland coast, thresher shark are active enough to make this the go-to destination for SoCal thresher lovers. The favored hotspot is Rock Island near La Conchita, however Carpinteria and Goleta are also good spots to try for longfin.

Coastal kelp beds are thick this year. They provide great habitat and plenty of feeding opportunities for calico bass. That’s where we come in. Live baits and swimbaits are both tempting calicos to take a fateful bite.

Kayakers and float tubers are scoring halibut and an occasional white seabass  inside Ventura county and Santa Barbara harbors.
